Chapter one
There’s blood on my toothbrush.
I stare at it for a second too long, the red swirling down the sink like it’s trying to spell
something. My gums are raw again. I press too hard without meaning too. Like I’m trying to
scrub something out of me.
Mom knocks on the door. Softly. Once.
"You’re going to be late."
I don’t answer. She walks away.
I rinse the sink, wipe my mouth, and try to ignore the pounding in my skull. Lately, my
body’s been feeling… louder than usual. Too aware. Too alive. My heartbeat hums in my throat
like a warning I don’t know how to read.
I grab my phone to check the time.
7:34 am.
I walk out of the bathroom and into the living room to get my bag.
And that’s when I see her.
The news alert is filling up the television screen:
17 year old Ivy North reported missing. Last seen Saturday night. No leads.
I stop breathing.
There’s a photo. Grainy. Probably pulled from social media. She’s looking just off-camera. Soft
smile. Blond. Freckles. A thin scar above her right eyebrow.
